'Aiken Fever' propels pop 'Idol' into York Fair lineup
By MIKE CAGGESO
Daily Record staff
Wednesday, April 21, 2004

Organizers of the 2004 York Fair were working on a covert operation for the past three months, and Tuesday afternoon they revealed the fruits of their labor.
Clay Aiken will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at the York Fair Grandstand.

Aiken's second-place finish in "American Idol" and his debut album "Measure of a Man" have catapulted him from high-school choir boy to one of People Magazine's "Sexiest Men Alive," among other image-based polls and magazine covers.

His album sold more than 600,000 copies in its first week on the shelves. His singles, "This is the Night" and "Invisible," have rung in the pop airwaves since then, further escalating what Cres Ottemiller, musical director of the York Fair, calls "Aiken fever."

"He's really become a superstar in the past three to six months," Ottemiller said. "During that time, he's gotten bigger and bigger."

Aiken is the lone pop act booked so far in an otherwise all-country concert schedule for the 2004 York Fair. Ottemiller said he is looking to book a classic rock act and something to appease the MTV viewers of York County.

"We would try to get one more country act if the opportunity comes around," Ottemiller said.

Tickets for Aiken are priced at $30 for track, plaza and center grandstand seats, and $26 for seats on the grandstand sides. There is a six-ticket limit per person for track and plaza seating, and a $1.50-per-ticket charge on phone orders. Cash, checks and major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard and American Express) are accepted.

Tickets go on sale at 7 a.m. Saturday and can be purchased at the box office on Carlisle Avenue, by calling 848-2033 or at http://www.yorkfair.org. Ottemiller said he wouldn't be surprised if fans began waiting in line Thursday for tickets.

"So many (Aiken fans) have called, committing themselves to us for this show," Ottemiller said.

York Fair books 'American Idol' star
Sellout expected for Clay Aiken
By NICKI LEFEVER Dispatch/Sunday News

Clay Aiken's boyish looks grace the cover of national magazines and his Broadway-style voice filters through the airwaves daily.

That powerful sound will be heard locally when Aiken performs Sept. 16 as part of the 2004 York Fair Grandstand of Stars. Tickets go on sale Saturday at the York Fair box office.

Fair director Creston Ottemiller Jr. said this concert is big.

"When we learned he was available for fairs this summer, we went for it," Ottemiller said. "We were on the phone with the West Coast talking to Clay's management for at least six weeks."

Ottemiller, whose goal is to sell out the grandstand every night of the fair, said his hope to book Aiken grew each day as it developed into a reality.

"I heard that he appeals to ages 12 to 90," Ottemiller said. "That is the biggest range we have ever thought of."

'American Idol': Aiken, 25, achieved stardom in one short year after appearing on the second season of "American Idol." When it came down to the final two, the small-statured Aiken stood next to husky Ruben Studdard. With 25 million people voting, Aiken was edged by a slim margin of 130,000 votes. That didn't stop him from pursuing his dreams of being a performer.

He was named one of People Magazine's Sexiest Men Alive in 2003. He was the musical guest on "Saturday Night Live" in February with host Megan Mullally from "Will and Grace."

"Measure of a Man," Aiken's first album, produced by RCA great Clive Davis, was released in stores late in 2003. It sold 613,000 copies during its first week.

The album includes "Invisible," "Run to Me" and "This is the Night."

Before appearing at the fair, Aiken will be returning from a national tour with "American Idol" season one winner Kelly Clarkson.

"He is easily one of the biggest attractions at the 2004 York Fair," Ottemiller said. "He has become huge in no time."

Tickets are still available for Brooks and Dunn on Sept. 10, George Jones with Trace Adkins on Sept. 13 and Lonestar with Buddy Jewell on Sept. 18.

Ottemiller said that with those three concerts, Aiken and the other peformers for whom he is bidding, he is almost certain that this year's grandstand attendance will be above 2003 figures. Last year, 600,000 admissions were sold to the fair.
