The world used the “We have to respect their culture.” excuse for too long to do nothing about a human rights issue, just because it was happening to women and not men. If you think you know what female circumcision is… think again. There are many different forms of it; some can be viewed as “mild” only when contrasted to the ones that are even worse, but none of them are acceptable, IMO. The one practiced in Ethiopia and Somalia happens to be THE worse form of it in the world.... |
Very very well put. I don't believe in whitewashing it either. To use the word "circumcision" is a joke. Female castration (and beyond) is what it is. The male equivalent would be to cut off most of the penis under barbaric conditions, partially sew up the urethral/ejaculatory openings (so that urine and and semen back up into the body system causing swelling and infection and assorted other physical conditions). You can bet that will never happen. The practice should be banned in every society world wide.

Yes, Savonnette, "female circumcision", ESPECIALLY as done in the countries you mention, is nothing less than sexual torture. There is no "cultural relativism" about this subject, IMO. I was appalled that UNICEF would use the term it did, as the World Health Organization (WHO) tells it like it is.
Corabeth wrote:
I don't know why you would be "appalled", I've seen both terms used in documentaries. I think the word circumcision gives uninformed people a sense of the type of cutting used. UNICEF is trying to bring attention to it with this effort, how can that be anything but good? Appalling (to me) would be if they observed it in Somalia and chose to say nothing. |
I am just as appalled as WinkyDink - I feel that "female circumcision" gives this practice a veneer of respectability to hide behind. Uninformed people likely know that male circumcision is done mainly for hygienic or religious reasons and has nothing to do with sexual pleasure or causing other problems down the road, as mutilation may cause with menstruation and childbirth. Circumcision is pretty much the opposite of mutilation as far as having an effect on a person.
So "female circumcision" sounds kind of like a benign minor medical procedure, while "female genital mutilation" tells it like it is. I don't think calling the practice circumcision will fire many people up against it - it almost sounds like a P.R. phrase for genital mutilation, designed to mask what really happens.
This practice has also made its way to the United States, through immigration. |

I have a question about playing the video on AOL. Should we access "On My Way Here" and play it from the Top 11 list or go to the "Sessions" page? Or does it matter, as long as it is played?
How do they determine the Top 11? |

One of the other boards I was on was discussing Clays trip to Africa. She has friends who take mission trips all the time. She brought up the fact that he would have had to have multiple shots, including experiencing some not so good side effects, and then would probably have to take medication when he gets back, also with many side effects.
When she got to his attire, this also got my heart :
"He wears light color for the heat and long sleeves to protect from mosquito carrying malaria, very dangerous if you get bitten."
I never thought about this part of his trip. I knew he went to dangerous places where violence is the norm, but the thought of his risking infectious diseases makes me marvel even more at the risk he takes.

So true, in so many ways.....
Some of which make me schmoopie:
If I could send him a fourth of July message, it might be something like...
Clay, I wish you safe travels back home, and always. I know you'll count your blessings a hundredfold as you return to a place of freedom, but you'll never forget all those who live in need and fear, but live so bravely through it. Bless you for your caring heart and generous spirit. Though you carry them demurely, they still shine brightly. Yes, your light scares a few who do not recognize a genuine selfless spirit, but it brightens the lives of oh so many more, here at home and in lands far away. You truly walk the walk, on a path that crosses so many borders--of countries, ages, races, abililties, and needs. May you be, and remain, truly blessed.
What a mighty fine man! |

So true. I didn’t mean to say that UNICEF used that expression. It is just called that in still too many articles, so I thought more people would be familiar with the issue if I named it that first. WHO does explain it very well, but the description is so clinical. I’m not saying that they should have gone into more details on an Internet website made to educate quickly. I’m just saying that to read it that way is just so… sanitized.
| Quote: |
| Corabeth: The last documentary I watched was so infuriating in that they dressed these girls up like it was some sort of celebration. |
I remember a documentary like that. The little girl thought it was a celebration at first and was so proud to be the center of attention. Afterward, I remember her being so angry at her parents and looking so betrayed. And she had gone through the “mildest’’ form of it. Plus in Western countries these days, girls are anesthetized. Not that that makes it any more acceptable, of course.
Western countries have to be careful on how to proceed to eradicate this custom. Big mistakes were made when feminists became aware in the 1970s of the practice and demanded that their respective governments act. I think organizations like UNICEF have learned to proceed in ways that don’t make things worse or insult women from the countries concerned, thus making them reject any change or help.
It cannot be said that Clay doesn’t cause interesting discussions among his fans. The stereotypes about him and most of us are just so distorted, absurd, vicious and wrong.

Clay does bring interesting discussions.
Now to the off topic part - how exactly do traditions like this start and spread? I just don't understand it. I understand circumcision for males kind of, but not completely since the necesity is not there as much. I understand where not eating pork came from, but that is kind of not a physical neccessary anymore. I still don't know how the first person who figured out how babes are made figured out if you go back 9 months.......
I guess I am asking if this is a religious movement behind the mutilation or something else. It just seeems an odd thing to spread. I understand a little more about binding of feet in China to keep your wife from running away, don't understand why women would support it, but then I have been blessed to have an easy life, so there is a lot I have trouble understanding that might be clear if I had lived somewhere else. |

Male circumcision is controversial with some people. Not all agree that it is necessary or healthy.
Personally, I think keeping women back is at the heart of all of these traditions, but I have no idea how they start--it's a good question. We have a few of our own which I'll bet people don't think of as all that odd or horrible--most assume they really are about beauty. Example: pointy-toed shoes with heels. When I taught footbinding, I always included bare-footed photos of women who've been wearing those all their lives next to photos of Chinese women whose feet had been bound. Mutilation for beauty in both cases. My mother hasn't worn heels in years, and never did wear anything particularly extreme, but her feet still badly deformed. For awhile there, some women were getting surgery and having parts of their feet removed to wear the extreme pointy shoes that have become so popular. Maybe it's still happening. Another is bras. People will argue about that, and not having much in that area to deal with, maybe there is a need for some people that I don't understand, but for some of us, they're just an instrument of pain and suffering.
Clay content: wonder if he prefers women who are made-up, fixed up, dressed up to the nines, or does he go for the natural look?
