Since no one seems to post in here anymore, I will just add the little tidbit about Clay's first week sales numbers.

For the week ending, October 20, 2003, MoaM sold 612,859 (~613,000) units. This is:

    * the third largest sales week of the year, right after 50 Cents' "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" (872,000) and Linkin Park's "Meteora" (810,000)
    * and the second-highest first week total of any debuting solo artist in the SoundScan era, after Snoop Doggy Dogg (in the 803,000)

Compare Clay's figures to that of the AI Christmas album which opened at No. 72 with 18,217 units sold.

All in all, the final message is congratulations Clay and all the fans who helped him accomplish this feat!

STRATOSPHERIC FIRST WEEK SALES SEND CLAY AIKEN?S DEBUT ALBUM TO NUMBER ONE ON THE BILLBOARD 200

?Measure Of A Man? Is Double Platinum; Sells Extraordinary 613,000 copies the first week.

*** *** ***

Aiken Has Second-Highest Sales Figure For a Debuting Solo Artist in the SoundScan Era

?Measure Of A Man,? Clay Aiken?s much-anticipated debut album, is already double platinum and had an extraordinary first week at retail, with sales of 613,000 copies and a smashing debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. Aiken has the third highest first-week sales figure of 2003, and the second-highest first week total of any debuting solo artist in the SoundScan era. ?Measure Of A Man? sold more copies than any other album by a debuting solo artist since Snoop Dogg?s ?Doggystyle? in December 1993.

?Clay Aiken is truly a major talent who will have a long-lasting music career. He has an extraordinary voice and very special natural charisma, which have clearly captivated millions. Clay?s debut album?s explosive sales is almost without historical precedent and we?re all over the moon about his album?s startling success.? Clive Davis, Chairman and CEO- RCA Music Group

The immediate success of the CD is the latest achievement in an amazing year for the 24-year-old native of Raleigh, North Carolina. On Oct. 14, 2002, he auditioned for ?American Idol? for the first time. One year later to the day, his album ?Measure Of A Man? was released by RCA. In reviewing Clay?s album as ?the best pop album of 2003? Billboard magazine went on to say, ?Every song, every note is brimming with glory. Throughout, the timeless production focuses squarely on Aiken?s immense talent. In another radio era, this album could be the ?Thriller? of the day, spawning hit after hit. ?Measure of a Man? is an utter triumph.?

The album was recorded in Los Angeles, Miami, and London under the close supervision of album producer Clive Davis, ?American Idol? creator Simon Fuller, and RCA executive Steve Ferrera. Among the songwriters and producers who contributed to the album are Steve Mac, Clif Magness, Desmond Child, Steve Morales, and Rick Nowels. In addition to original songs like ?I Will Carry You,? ?No More Sad Songs,? and ?I Survived You,? the album contains Aiken?s current hit at radio, ?Invisible,? and his platinum single, ?This Is The Night.?

?I am so proud of Clay. He is an inspiration to everyone around him. He is immensely talented, hard working and intelligent, yet still self-deprecating. Such enormous and remarkable success could not be happening to a more deserving person.? Simon Fuller, Clay Aiken manager, creator and executive producer of American Idol.

Shipping double platinum and debuting at No. 1 were just a part of the most memorable week in Aiken?s life. He also performed the National Anthem at the first game of the World Series, made his debut on ?The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,? and appeared on ?Good Morning America,? ?The Early Show,? ?The View,? and ?TRL.?

As ?Measure Of A Man? continues to fly off the shelves, there?s much more coming up for Aiken. He will perform live on ?The American Music Awards? on Nov. 16. He has been nominated for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist as well as the Fan?s Choice Award. Aiken is also scheduled to appear on ?The Billboard Music Awards,? live from Las Vegas on Dec. 10.

On November 25th, he?ll sing holiday favorites from the RCA album ?American Idol: The Holiday Classics? on ?American Idol: Christmas Songs,? a FOX-TV special airing at 8pm. On Nov. 27th he will participate in Macy?s Thanksgiving Day Parade and on Nov. 28th he?ll be one of the stars of Nick At Night Holiday Christmas Special.

Group of Companies was founded by Simon Fuller in 1985 and has achieved over 35 No. 1 singles and 13 No. 1 albums. Fuller also has an impressive tally of over 60 Top 40 albums and 170 Top 40 singles in the UK alone. Fuller created and managed the Spice Girls, who became a global phenomenon under his guidance, selling over 38 million albums. In 1998, Fuller?s 19 launched S Club 7, which has sold 10 million CDs worldwide, while its three television series to date have consistently topped children?s viewing figures, reaching 104 countries. In 2001, Simon Fuller?s 19TV created and produced the television phenomenons ?Pop Idol? and ?American Idol.? ?Pop Idol? launched the singing careers of Will Young and Gareth Gates in the UK, of whom are managed by Fuller and signed to his 19 Recordings record label, while ?American Idol? did the same for Kelly Clarkson in the US where she has sold over 2million albums and had a #1 single with Miss Independent. Clarkson, Justin Guarini, Tamyra Gray , Christina Christian, Clay Aiken, and Ruben Studdard all of whom are managed by 19 Management.

BMG is the global music division of Bertelsmann AG, one of the world?s leading media companies. BMG owns more than 200 record labels in 42 countries including Ariola, Arista Records, J Records, Jive Records, RCA Records and RCA Label Group ? Nashville. In addition, BMG?s music publishing operations are the third largest in the world.

BTW, a little birdie told me that MOAM's sales this week [week 21] were 17,217 for a total of 2,390,743. Looks like it'll definitely break 2.4 million next week. Kelly Clarkson is creeping up towards 2 mil... with 1,930,980. She's number 186 on the Billboard 200, and over 2 weeks has sold about 13,000 units. At this rate, she could hit 2 million in 3 months or so.

If those numbers are correct, a small adjustment is needed.

Merry Christmas With Love, released 16 November 2004

Week 1 (ending 21 November 2004): 270,010 (actual first-week sales were around 268,600 plus street-date violations of about 1,400)/#4 (Soundscan)
Week 2 (ending 28 November 2004): 183,529 /#11 (Soundscan, thanks to tvguru)*
Week 3 (ending 5 December 2004): 134,292/#13 (Soundscan, thanks to tvguru)
Week 4 (ending 12 December 2004): 181,320/#10 (Soundscan)
Week 5 (ending 19 December 2004): 147,653/#23 (Soundscan)
Week 6 (ending 26 December 2004): 102,181/#38 (Soundscan)
Week 7 (ending 2 January 2005): 11,895/#149 (Soundscan)
Fell out of the top-200 the week ending 9 January 2005

Weekly sales for 2005:
Week 8 (ending 31 October 2005): 2,058 (at least 1,043,534)
Week 9 (ending 6 November 2005): 5,129 (at least 1,045,592)
Week 10 (ending 13 November 2005): 8,400 (at least 1,053,992)
Week 11 (ending 20 November 2005): 11,173 (at least 1,065,165)
Week 12 (ending 27 November 2005): 20,191 (at least 1,085,356)
Week 13 (ending 4 December 2005): 25,963 (at least 1,111,319)
Week 14 (ending 11 December 2005): 32,579 (at least 1,143,898)
Week 15 (ending 18 December 2005): 34,467 (at least 1,178,365)
Week 16 (ending 25 December 2005): 32,651 (at least 1,211,016)

Tally to-date: At least 1,211,016 copies sold through 25 December 2005. 1,030,880 copies sold through 2 January 2005. Cumulative Soundscan tally through 3 July 2005 is 1,009,735, so I guess our provisional cumulative tally would add 27,349 to that (this was the disparity as of 2 January 2005). Cumulative Soundscan tally (not including sales to Christian retailers) through 25 December 2005 is 1,176,384.

Note: The two weeks add up to 453,539 copies sold, so, somehow, somewhere, 5,642 sales were either lost in the shuffle when the overall tally was tabulated or deducted from the first-week tally (possibly because of a reporting error?). If the latter is true, then first-week sales would actually be 264,368 copies sold.
Note #2: Some oddity has resulted in the tallies being counted towards MCWL cumulative tally being lower than the actual weekly tally. The Soundscan chart posts the above weekly tallies, but the cumulative tally through week 7 is 1,003,531. Not sure why there is a disparity between the sum of the weekly tallies and the cumulative tallies, but I speculate that it is because of Christian music retailers -- only some report directly to Soundscan -- it's possible that only those are counted towards the cumulative tally, where MCWL's weekly tally includes an extrapolated figure for sales at all Christian music retailers (all of them do not report to Soundscan). Based on the fact that this happened to Ruben, as well, a better theory may be that the album sales through Provident are only counting towards the weekly tallies, but not the cumulative tallies.

Here are the latest Sound Scan sales numbers for the various Idol contestants (for albums only - EPs and CDSs are ignored). These were all accurate as of March 23, 2005. I’ve updated the numbers up to April 6, 2005 for the four currently charting albums; other album sales increases should be negligible.

Clay Aiken - Measure of a Man - 2,695,203
Kelly Clarkson - Thankful - 2,158,106
Ruben Studdard - Soulful - 1,769,039
Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway - 1,674,742 (now 1,817,700)
Fantasia - Free Yourself - 1,214,262 (now 1,272,100)
Clay Aiken - Merry Christmas With Love - 1,009,294
Ruben Studdard - I Need an Angel - 378,497 (now 388,200)
Josh Gracin - Josh Gracin - 354,772 (now 369,800)
Kimberly Locke - One Love - 201,801
William Hung - Inspiration - 189,563
Diana Degarmo - Blue Skies - 143,511
Justin Guarini - Justin Guarini - 141,987
Tamyra Gray - Dreamer - 119,826
William Hung - Hung for the Holidays – 29,189
R J Helton - Real Life - 20,892

I believe this is a reputable poster.

Ruben's Soulful: 1,773,972 copies sold
I Need An Angel: 414,314 (this total is also too low -- same issue with MCWL).

Diana's Blue Skies: 158,545

From mtv.com:

Millions of Americans watched or voted for them on "Idol," but of the 12th- through third-place finishers who have gone on to release records, only one has gone gold: second-season country singer Josh Gracin (around 646,500 copies sold), who finished third.

Another second-season singer, third-place finisher Kimberley Locke, has sold approximately 209,000 copies of One Love, but after her, the next-best loser is — tellingly — William Hung's Inspiration (194,00). Trailing in the dust of "She Bangs" are Tamyra Gray's The Dreamer (122,000), RJ Helton's Real Life (21,000), John Stevens' Red (18,000), George Huff's Miracles (17,000) and self-titled albums from Jasmine Trias (12,000) and Corey Clark (2,400).

Compare that to sales of Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway (4,811,000), Clay Aiken's Measure of a Man (2,740,000), Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts (2,184,000), Ruben Studdard's Soulful (1,779,000) and Fantasia's Free Yourself (1,674,000) and it becomes quite clear: To make a significant impact in the music industry, making the final 12 of "American Idol" is not enough. You need to make the final two.

For reference, the totals for Breakaway and Some Hearts match Soundscan numbers through February 19, 2006.

From the issue of Entertainment Weekly on stands April 14, 2006 (thanks to Notacanuck for the link!):

Josh Gracin:
Quote:
His eponymous 2004 debut sold an admirable 655,000 copies and spawned a No. 1 country single (''Nothin' to Lose'').

LaToya London:
Quote:
Now living in Southern California, the gospel-trained vocalist inked a deal with a Concord Records imprint in November 2004, but her debut CD, Love & Life, stalled after its release last September, selling just 50,430 copies.

A few more numbers from The New York Post. Based on the numbers reported for Carrie and for Kelly's Breakaway, the Soundscan numbers seem to be for the week ending April 23, 2006.

Summarizing in case the link dies:

Clay Aiken Measure of a Man: 2,742,989
Clay Aiken Merry Christmas with Love: 1,189,295

Kelly Clarkson Thankful: 2,499,565
Kelly Clarkson Breakaway: 5,145,272
Justin Guarini Justin Guarini: 142,455
Ruben Studdard Soulful: 1,780,823
Ruben Studdard I Need An Angel: 437,114
Fantasia Free Yourself: 1,687,346
Diana DeGarmo Blue Skies: 163,857
Carrie Underwood Some Hearts: 2,699,678
Bo Bice The Real Thing: 601,649

They also include some concert ticket sales from Pollstar, which don't really belong in this thread but in the interest of preserving them somewhere:

Clay (since December 2003): $27,823,748

Kelly (since July 2003): 24,890,591
Ruben (since December 2003): 616,970
Carrie (since December 2005): 555,000
Bo (since October 2005): 73,912

Justin, Fantasia and Diana all say N/A under concert ticket sales.

Edited because I gazed earnestly at that NYP graphic, realized that Clay was the only top 2 finisher whose numbers weren't there, decided the pic was cut off on the left and bought a print copy. *g* I've added Clay's numbers above in bold.

Posted in the main thread by Notacanuck. These numbers are rounded off, but based on the number for Bo they seem to reflect sales through May 7, 2006. These are USA sales as reported to Soundscan.

Some cumulative numbers from Ken Barnes' Idol chatter blog(11/9/06). Based on the number for Pickler, this appears to be through the week ending 11/5/06:

Quote:
> Album standings (for one album unless otherwise noted):

1. Kelly Clarkson: 8.1 million (2 albums)
2. Clay Aiken: 4.3 million (3 albums)
3. Carrie Underwood: 3.65 million
4. Ruben Studdard: 2.3 million (3 albums)
5. Fantasia: 1.7 million
6. Josh Gracin: 677,000
7. Bo Bice: 654,000
8. Kimberley Locke: 211,000
9. Diana DeGarmo: 165,000
10. Justin Guarini: 143,000
11. Tamyra Gray: 123,000
12. Kellie Pickler: 79,000
13. LaToya London: 55,000
14. George Huff: 44,000
15. RJ Helton: 21,000
16. John Stevens: 20,000
17. Jasmine Trias: 14,000
18. Jim Verraros: 3,700 (He may have 2 albums out, not sure. If so, this would be a composite total)
19. Corey Clark: 2,500

Idol compilations have sold 2.8 million, which would put them at No. 4, but that's not really fair. Any finalist not listed does not have an album registered with SoundScan or has sales too "negligible" to report.

> Singles:
(does not count downloads, which are listed separately below)

1. Clay Aiken: 1.3 million
2. Ruben Studdard: 751,000
3. Kelly Clarkson: 636,000
4. Carrie Underwood: 457,000
5. Taylor Hicks: 449,000
6. Fantasia: 409,000
7. Bo Bice: 347,000

9. Katharine McPhee: 144,000
10. Kimberley Locke: 85,000
11. La Toya London: 8,500
12. John Stevens: 2,700

Idol group-sing singles have sold 508,000 copies.

Not in the system, because they hit the spotlight before SoundScan started tracking downloads, didn't have tracks available for download or had "negligible" numbers: all the first-season Idols except Kelly, Vanessa Olivarez, Charles Grigsby, Julia DeMato, Rickey Smith, Trenyce, Matthew Rogers, Leah LaBelle, Jon Peter Lewis, Jennifer Hudson (that'll change when Dreamgirls comes out), Amy Adams and Anthony Fedorov. (I have a hunch that Anthony might not be in there because his name may have been misspelled when his numbers were being tracked.)
